After more than 10 years, mining operations in the Canadian Malartic pit of the eponymous open-pit mine officially ended on May 5, 2023, when the last production truck and its precious cargo were brought back to the surface.
The Canadian Malartic pit, which is 1.8 km long, 1 km wide and 360 metres deep, will now be used for waste rock disposal, and possibly for tailings disposal.
Under the deposition plan, the pit will be partially filled. At the very end of operations – remember that mining in the Barnat pit is expected to continue until 2029 – the pit will be left to fill with natural groundwater and precipitation.
Congratulations and thank you to the Canadian Malartic Mine team for this historic moment!
